I’m available as a session guitarist or dep guitarist, bassist or flutist to dep for your gig/recording in Newark, Nottingham, Lincoln and surrounding areas. I read music but also improvise well. I’m comfortable in jazz, folk, funk, pop, soul, rock, acoustic, musical theatre, so…

If your normal guitarist or bassist can’t make your gig, give me a call.

I’m a proficient player, technical but not a shredder. I like to keep stage volume down and solos short. I’m classically trained, but cut my teeth in jazz big bands and soul bands. I respect and listen to all styles, but I’m probably not your man if you play drop-tuned Metal. 🙂

Above all, I understand the need to be a performer as well as a musician when performing for functions, When I play, I’m always smiling and I try to provide entertainment in a secondary role to the band’s front person.

There are videos of live performances with a soul band on my videos page.

I’ve got plenty of experience playing in a variety of styles, not limited to:

  • theatre bands/orchestras (inc. Jesus Christ Superstar, Full Monty, Rent, Blood Brothers, Grease, Whistle Down the Wind and Others)
  • ceilidh bands and world music
  • soul/funk/disco bands
  • jazz bands (big bands and small ensembles)
  • rock bands
  • classical guitar

I’m happy to just turn up on the day and play the gig or attend one rehearsal where necessary. I prefer a week or a fortnight’s preparation to memorise a set of 20+ songs or a couple of days to play a set from sheet music. Obviously this varies with song complexity.

I’ve recently been playing with:
Bass: the Merryn Ashwell Quintet, a small jazz band.
Guitar/Bass: the Northside Jazz Band, a versatile jazz band.
Guitar: Rebranded, a rock covers band
Guitar: The Soul Thieves, party band, a party function band.
Guitar: Soul Destination, a 6 piece funk/soul wedding band.
Guitar: The North, a 5 piece party band.
Guitar: Miss Isle – a 4 piece party band.
Bass/Guitar: The Main Street Jazz Band, a jazz trio/quartet.
Bass: The Acetones, a soul, motown and funk wedding band.

  • Quality electric and acoustic guitars by Godin, Ibanez and Stonebridge (Furch)
  • Guitar amplifiers to suit any size venue by Blackstar, Marshall, Laney and Keld
  • Wired in ear monitoring
  • Basic recording setup
